How an AAD Works

An AAD will cut the reserve closing loop in the event that you reach a freefall speed at a preset altitude. You should always jump with an AAD turned on, unless you are one of the few people who can afford to not use one. Most DZs require an AAD.

Deciding on an Altitude

Your AAD may fire ±260 ft higher/lower than set, due to the burble it is in when falling belly-to-earth.

Panel I, back to earth: the depression zone (burble) is above the jumper and has no influence, the pressure sensor on their back reads X hPa, and the Vigil registers the stated or real altitude of Y ft (or m). Panel II, face to earth: the AAD or pressure sensor sits in the depression zone (burble) behind the jumper's back and reads X hPa minus 10 hPa, so the Vigil registers an up to 10 hPa lower pressure notwithstanding they are at the same level, and the stated altitude becomes Y plus or minus 260 ft (or plus or minus 79 m).
